Your first year

What to expect if you decide to join Gilbert Inglefield Lodge, from the first chat to becoming a Master Mason

Most people who join us say the hardest part was not knowing what to expect. This page sets it out plainly: the steps, the time it takes and what to wear. There is no obligation at any stage, and you can ask us anything.

From first chat to initiation

  1. A chat over a coffee or a beer. One or two members meet you somewhere informal. It is a conversation, not an interview: we want to hear what interests you, and you can ask us anything. Your partner is welcome to come along.
  2. Meet more of us. We invite you to one of our social events, so you can meet more members in a relaxed setting. There is no formal interview: this is where we get to know each other and answer any remaining questions.
  3. Proposal and ballot. Two members propose and second you, and the Lodge votes on your application at one of its meetings.
  4. Your initiation. You are initiated at one of our six Lodge meetings.
  5. Passing and Raising. Two further ceremonies follow, after which you are a Master Mason and a full member of the Lodge.

Your first evening

You will be asked to arrive at about 5pm. Your proposer meets you and stays with you throughout, so you are never left on your own.

The ceremony is serious, but friendly. Nothing in it will embarrass you or conflict with your religious, civil or moral duties. You do not need to learn anything beforehand.

Afterwards everyone dines together at the “festive board”. It is a relaxed, sociable meal, and the Lodge will drink a toast to you as its newest member. Most evenings finish at about 10pm, although many of us stay on for a drink afterwards.

Your mentor

Every new member has a mentor: an experienced member who explains each step, answers your questions and helps you settle in. You will never be expected to work things out on your own.

Questions people often ask

Can I leave if it is not for me?

Yes, at any time, with no penalty. You are free to resign whenever you wish.

What if I cannot make every meeting?

That is fine. Work, family and other commitments come first, and members understand that.
