What Freemasonry is, what it means to be a Freemason, and how to join us
What is Freemasonry?
Freemasonry is one of the oldest social and charitable organisations in the world, with a history of more than 300 years. It brings together men of all ages, races, religions and backgrounds who share the values of integrity, friendship, respect and service.
Freemasons meet in Lodges. Each Lodge meeting includes a ceremony, presented as a short play, which uses the tools and traditions of the medieval stonemasons to teach lessons about how to live a good life. Afterwards, members and guests dine together at the “festive board”, where many lifelong friendships are made.
What it means to be a Freemason
Friendship
Freemasonry brings together people who might never otherwise meet, from every walk of life. Members support one another and enjoy each other’s company, in the Lodge and socially.
Personal development
Each of the three degrees, Entered Apprentice, Fellow Craft and Master Mason, explores a stage of life and encourages self-improvement. Taking part in the ceremonies builds confidence, memory and public speaking.
Charity and service
Giving to others is at the heart of Freemasonry. Members support local causes and national Masonic charities, always within their means. Read more on our Charity page.
Continuing the journey
After becoming a Master Mason, many members go on to join the Royal Arch, which completes the story begun in the three Craft degrees.
Who can join?
Gilbert Inglefield Lodge, like every lodge under the United Grand Lodge of England, is open to men aged 18 or over. Members come from all faiths and backgrounds. You need to be of good character and able to affirm a belief in a Supreme Being, in whatever way you understand it. You do not have to follow any particular religion.
Women Freemasons have their own Grand Lodges. See Can women be members?
